Standard optical fibers are made by first building a large-diameter
"preform" with a carefully controlled refractive index profile, and then
"pulling" the preform for forming the long, thin optical fiber. The
preform is generally made by 3 chemical vapor deposition methods; viz vapor
axial deposition, outside vapor deposition, and inside vapor deposition.
With inside vapor deposition, the
preform starts as a hollow glass tube approximately 40 centimeters (16 in)
long, which is placed horizontally and rotated gradually on a lathe. Gases such
as germanium tetrachloride (GeCl4) or silicon tetrachloride (SiCl4) are
injected with oxygen at the end of the tube. The gases are then heated by means
of an outside hydrogen burner, thereby bringing the temperature of the gas up
to 1,900 K (1,600 °C, 3,000 °F), where the tetrachloride’s react with oxygen
for producing produce silica or Germania (germanium dioxide) particles in the
optical fiber perform industry.

In vapor axial or outside vapor
deposition, the glass is formed by flame hydrolysis, a reaction wherein
germanium tetrachloride and silicon tetrachloride are oxidized by reaction with
water (H2O) in an oxyhydrogen flame. In outside vapor deposition, the glass is
deposited onto a solid rod, which is removed before additional dispensation. In
vapor axial deposition, a short seed rod is used, and a porous preform, whose
length is not limited by the size of the source rod, is built up on its end.
The porous preform is consolidated into a solid, transparent preform by heating
to about 1,800 K (1,500 °C, 2,800 °F).
Typical communications fiber
makes use of a circular preform. For certain applications such as double-clad
fibers, the other form is preferred. Herein, an asymmetric shape improves the
filling factor for laser pumping in the Optical Fiber Preform Market. However,
careful polishing of the preform is important, since any defects of the preform
superficial affect the optical and mechanical possessions of the subsequent
fiber. In particular, the preform for the test-fiber shown in the figure was
not polished well, and cracks are seen with the confocal optical microscope.
